We really like Born a Champion (2021), The book is my very favorite ever. It touched me deeply as a child, and even as an adult I dust off my old hardcover and reread it every few years. The movie was a profound disappointment--a cotton candy-like ball of Hollywood fluff more worthy of the Olsen sisters than an adaptation of one of the best novels ever written.\n\nMany details of the story were changed, an overhaul I would endorse if the new stuff were compelling. I personally do not feel movies need to slavishly follow books, as a great director can bring a fresh eye to a classic story, making it his own. But here, every addition or change was pointless and served only to diminish the power of the story. As just one example, in the original story--where hunger was a major theme--Sara gives a starving illiterate scullery maid a meat pie to eat. In this movie, it seems to be about lack of luxury footwear: Sarah gives the servant a pair of Mae West style fur-trimmed slippers with a note that says, \"Let's be friends.\"\n\nBut it's not the minor details that result in this movie becoming a tragic dumbing down of a great classic, it's the big ones. The main message of the movie is a jawdroppingly meaningless platitude:\"every girl is a princess.\" The original, by contrast, was about one exceptional girl whose beautiful soul and empathy for others continued even as she was transformed overnight from a rich, pampered elite boarder to a pauper. In the book, her self-control and nobility of spirit made her a princess, no matter her circumstances. Lesson to little girls: It's what's inside that matters.\n\nFor those who love the book, I highly recommend the BBC version starring Amelia Shankley. This beautiful, realistic and haunting version brought tears to my eyes. I watched it for the first time last night on YouTube simply because I had to cleanse myself from the insipid Cuarón version. I recommend that anyone reading this skip the intermediate step and pass right to the BBC version, which is also available through Amazon on DVD:A Little Princess.. \"The Changeling\" is not \"The Haunting,\" \"The Innocents,\" or any of a number of fine stories (and films) that leave one in doubt whether the events are supernatural or manufactured by an overwrought mind. This is a no teasing, straight-ahead, ripping good ghost story. By this point in their careers neither George Scott nor his wife and co-star Trish van Devere had to make this movie. One imagines that one day their agents sent them a script, they read it, they agreed it was a damned good story, and for that reason just did it with a director whom they trusted. Both actors play their characters with just the right balance of skepticism, bewilderment, grief, fury, and, finally, terror. (The movie's far better for the fact that they don't exercise the clich of falling in love, which would only have slackened the tension.) All the actors, mostly Canadians (such as John Colicos and Barry Morse), are perfectly cast. A standout is elderly Melvyn Douglas, whose role could itself have been a clich: he is riveting whenever he's onscreen. All the other values are in place: the superb musical score, the cinematography, the locations, the production design. The movie is as much a mystery as a thriller, and the undercurrents become deeper, more unsettled, more suspenseful, and more horrible: to pinch from Henry James, the screws just keep turning until the thing bursts wide open.
